Mangaluru: The second episode of Career Guidance with Prof. Ronald Pinto on planning career was premiered on September 24.
Brian Fernandes, Director of Spearhead Media Group hosted the show by NewsKarnataka, which is powered by Loyala College, Bengaluru.
Prof. Ronald Pinto who is the Director of the Institute for Individual Development, Mangaluru, specifically talked about a career in medicine.
“I have seen many people who consider medicine to be the best career since they help to save the lives of people,” he said.
Discussing about the qualities required for someone in a medical field, Prof. Ronald said, “one of the most important qualities that they require is empathy and sympathy. He/she also has to be service-minded and consider the life of the patients to be very precious.”
He explained that Allopathy is the most famous form of medicine which is accepted all across the world. “Other alternative forms of medicine like Ayurveda, Naturopathy, Yoga and so on, are also considered as important,” he said. He said that the Ayurvedic system of medicine is very popular in the village areas but the difference with Allopathy is that the treatment and result is slow.
“Through NEET examination, the government fills in the various seats for admissions to Medicine stream. The states have to build up the seats based on all India quota and state quota. In all government colleges, 15% is government quota, in private colleges, government decides the quota balance. For the government quota, fees are already fixed but for the private quota, the colleges are fixing the fees. In Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, the expenses are said to come up to 1 crore and hence many cannot afford this. Even for merit seat, they have to pay a particular fixed amount of fees,” he explained.
Elaborating on the challenges of the Medical field, he said “first of all getting a seat is very tough and one has to work really hard for it for many years. Monetary resources are also very important for such an education and sometimes it becomes difficult to manage all the funds. Even after becoming a doctor, one should be bold and stable-minded while working.”
In the end he spoke about the various other job opportunities available in the medical sector. He said that BSc Nursing, BMLT and Radiography are also important fields which offers a lot of job opportunities in India and abroad.
