Social media plays an important role in creating awareness and influencing beliefs, attitudes and practices. It is one of the fastest growing areas of online activity and is one of the fastest growing areas for malicious cyber activity. Social networking has become the most popular activity in today’s internet world, with billions of people across the world using this media to meet old friends, making new friends, to collect and share information. Social networking while being a popular media has several disadvantages associated with it. It makes and breaks relationships.
The event was focused on how to use social media for social welfare and challenged each individual to make use of social media network effectively. Prof Juby Thomas empowered the students about the impact of using social media network. Juby enlightened the students saying excessive use of social media may cause phantom vibration syndrome, narcissistic personality disorder, and net brain disorder. She also expressed that today social media among youth challenges privacy and relationships. She suggested that as a solution one can expand the purpose towards the welfare of others through education, information, administration, governance, socialization, marketing for promotion purposes etc. She also imparted how to use social media for social welfare. She affirmed saying “be the producers of information rather than being a consumer of knowledge”.
Rahimat Nujoom, Assistant Professor, Shree Devi College of Physiotherapy, the president of the workshop addressed the gathering.
The session was very interactive and educative with relevant issues by imparting that social media should be used for utility and not for degrading the values.
