Mangaluru: Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management (SCEM) will be organizing a seminar on Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) on the occasion of Inauguration of Coherent-Excimer Laser on July 20, 2016 at Sahyadri Campus. The seminar will be organized by Center of Excellence in Nano-science & Technology (CENT) in association with Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Electronics & Communication Engineering.

The Excimer laser was funded by the SCEM Management and co-sponsored by Coherent, Germany. This co-sponsorship was facilitated by Dr. Burkhard Fechner, Asia region Sales Manager, Coherent, Germany and Dr. Lalit Kumar, Managing Director, Laser Science Services (I) Pvt. Ltd, Mumbai. Dr. Fechner received PhD in 1987 from University of Hannover, Germany, in “Laser Atomic Spectroscopy in High Electric and Magnetic fields”. Dr. Lalit Kumar as a head of Laser Science Services (I) Pvt. Ltd represents over 30 of the leading laser manufacturers from all over the globe, covering a wide range of products which includes: scientific and industrial laser systems, spectroscopy and microscopy equipment and imaging systems. The total cost of the laser with special gases for operation is about Rs. 1 Crore. The Coherent-Excimer Laser Compex-Pro 201 is the only gas laser with high energy over 750mJ in the west coast of India excluding the institutions at Mumbai.

Pulsed Laser deposition is a powerful technique for the growth of thin films of multi-component complex materials. The importance of the technique is such that it is possible to realize stoichiometry of elements of the complex material in the thin films grown by PLD. Further, PLD is a powerful technique for research; especially, when a material cannot be stabilized in bulk either due to the problem of ionic radius or due to variable valance state; such materials can be synthesized in the form of thin films by PLD. PLD is also very useful for the formation of Nano-materials. Hence, the inauguration of Excimer laser will act as nucleus for CENT and the research effort on thin films and Nano-materials is expected to make rapid progress, especially with collaboration with neighboring institutions and industry partners.
