How to prepare for getting admission into IITs

JEE stands for Joint Entrance Examination, which mainly consists of 2 papers. The first paper is conducted to grant admission into Undergraduate Engineering programs (i.e. B.E/ B.Tech.) at the NITs, NIITs and other centrally functioned technical institutions (CFTIs). Whereas, the second paper is conducted for granting admission into B.Arch and B. Planning courses across the country. Moreover, paper 1 is also conducted as an eligibility test for JEE advanced too.

Thus, aiming for getting a seat into IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs, the very first step is to focus on preparing effectively for JEE Mains. As better preparations often lead to success and so it requires a certain strategy, as well as a clear study plan; which are the key components to success.

In the 12th Boards examination, a candidate must score 75% marks or should be placed in the top 20 percentile in their respective boards. However, candi9dateshaving SC/St quotas are required to score at least 65% marks.

The NTA or National Testing Agency is responsible for conducting the JEE, which was formerly organized by the CBSE. It is a national-level screening test that is conducted year-round in order to offer admission into B.E., B.Tech, B.Plan, and B.Arch. programs.

Thus, candidates who wish to pursue UG engineering programmes in various renowned institutions like IITs, CFTIs, NITs must qualify for the test by securing a minimum of the qualifying cut-off marks.

But, the NTA has introduced new changes in the examination pattern of JEE mains. These are:

  • From 2020, the exam is supposed to be conducted separately for BE/ BTech, BArch and Planning courses. Thus, a candidate can appear for all of these courses or separately.
  • There is a hike in the application fees, which has increased as compared to that of last year.
  • Change in examination pattern: the number of questions in the paper has been decreased to 25 questions for each subject, as compared to last year which had a question count of 30. Moreover, there will be questions with numerical values apart from MCQs.
  • A separate paper has been set for B.Planning in the JEE mains since 2020
  • The age limit for applying for JEE mains has been removed
  • For the 2nd paper of JEE, it is mandatory to have Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry as the major subjects of a student
  • The candidate who has scored ranks amongst the 2,45,000 qualified students will be eligible to appear for JEE advanced.
  • NTA has set up more than 3400 practice centres across the nation for helping the students to prepare themselves better

Thus, JEE being such a competitive examination, it is necessary to have a clear study regime as well as be determined towards the goal of securing a seat. There are certain strategies that can be followed by the candidates in order to secure a seat in any renowned engineering college. Some of these are:

  1. Be familiar with the syllabus: It is important to have a clear knowledge of the JEE syllabus in order to make the preparation worth the effort. Thus, it is necessary to learn the topics, understand the concepts as well as practice questions according to the syllabus.
  2. Maintain a timetable: It is necessary to have a well-constructed timetable which is quite helpful with time management, as well as make the study routine more effective. Thus, it is important to lay down a study schedule for JEE and give time to all the subjects. Often it has been observed that students tend to ignore some of the chapters during their board’s preparation, because of low weightage or confusion regarding the concepts. But it is advised not to skip any concepts while preparing for JEE.
  3. Prepare notes: It is necessary to write notes while simplifying the concepts, as this would be helpful in grasping the concepts more firmly as well as have better retention of them, in their memory. Hence, start to write down notes from day one of preparation.
  4. Choose NCERT textbooks over others: The textbooks developed by NCERT or the National Council of Education, Research, and Training are often the smartest choices to refer to these textbooks rather than other books available. This is due to the fact that the NCERT textbooks are developed according to the latest CBSE curriculum, thereby being the smartest option for making effective preparations for the CBSE boards examination as well as other competitive examinations, such as JEE. Moreover, JEE Main Important Questions are found to be helpful while making effective preparations for JEE.
  5. Practice more often: As the saying goes, “Practice makes a man perfect”; thus it is necessary to practice sample papers or to appear for mock tests online, which are helpful in making preparations quite effective. Thus, it is necessary to have a proper habit of practice as this will also help in effective time-management capability.

Therefore, in order to score a better rank in JEE mains and to be eligible for JEE advanced, one must be well determined towards their goal. It is necessary to have a spirit of hard work as this examination has a high level of competition and seats are limited.

The JEE mains and JEE advanced are such entrance examinations that tend to test the candidate’s eligibility based on their different levels of conceptual understanding. Hence, it is important to boost one’s cognitive ability as well as be well acquainted with the concepts such that it helps in proper time management during the examination.

Also, it is necessary to maintain proper health along with a hard-working mind, because of the fact that a healthy body holds a healthy mind.  Hence, along with the studies one must ensure to inculcate a habit of regular exercise. Also, to make preparations for such a competitive examination, the candidates must prepare themselves well during their Class 11th and 12th and must decide their area of interest for their further studies. Thus, have a better study regime and stick to it.
