Moodubidre: “Future of Democracy is at risk because of lack of debating and synthesizing nature on any matter before decision” said Annamalai, Superintendent of Police, Chikmagaluru. He was speaking after inaugurating the State Level Debate Competition organized in collaboration with Adani Group, Alva’s Education Foundation’s Rostrum Speakers’ Club and The Hindu, at Kuvempu hall, Vidyagiri.

The Cop added and said, “Debate is the part and partial of Life and democracy. Whichever may be the career we choose, we should debate, analyse and negotiate through the thing before coming to a decision. This will help us in bringing out best output of all”.

“Orating skill will always help us in placing our point effectively. Quoting the example of Indian politician and former diplomat Shashi Taroor, he was successful in turning over the pages of the history in a limited time in Oxford University on Indian History. Former US president Barak Obama is well known for his powerful orating and narrating skills, he added.

“Debating competitions are declining these days. And even new generation people are lack the interest of debating. The recent Budget which was passed without a single debate is an example for this outcome. Our young politicians are trained in such a way that they are not ready to hear other viewpoints. This is a threatening development for future” he added.

The Super-cop added and said, “The Hindu newspaper is providing quality news with approved analysis. The debate competitions are another exemplary work of The Hindu. This is a great platform for students to showcase their talent. Though we win or lose, they will help make more skilled and sharpen our thoughts. There is a need of such programs to develop more and more intellectual curiosity”.

Presiding over the program Alva’s Education Foundation Trustee Vivek Alva said, ‘It is not a matter of winning or losing, participating in competitions gives immense knowledge to learn. Students are having lot of contents and ideas to share. Hence, this is right platform to put across their valuable thoughts ‘’. He added and said, ‘We hold The Hindu newspaper with highest esteem because of its objective and analytical contents.

More than 200 participants from Bengaluru, Mangaluru, Mysuru, Hassan, Chikmagaluru, Kodagu took part in debate competitions.

The Hindu Mangaluru Branch Assistant Manager Mathew, Rostrum Speakers’ Club Coordinator Deepak was present among others.

Valedictory Session

Being chief guest in valedictory session, Executive Director and Joint President of Adani Group of Companies, Kishore Alva said, ‘’Debate increases critical thinking of the students. It helps to build linkage between ideas and concepts more meaningful and purposeful. He added and said debater tends to enjoy success in all walks of life. It makes individual politically active and high level of civil engagements among its stakeholders’.

Delivering his presidential remarks in valedictory session, Vivek Alva, Managing Trustee, Alva’s Education Foundation, narrated the life story of Kishore Alva growing into a successful businessman and motivated the students and further he said “College is the place which evolves you. It seeks recognition for your talent. So come up with innovative events which are technically and ideologically focused.

Winners

Arun A of JSS Mahavidyapeeta, Mysuru secured First place, Nivya Rodrigues of Sahyadri College, Mangaluru stood Second place and Aliva Mishra of K.S.Hegde Medical Academy, Mangaluru held Third Place. Thirtasavla, ShubhaKotyan, PriyaBasu, Samarth Gowda, Tejaswini, Jude Dicunha, Annie Varshitha(Seven members) who succeed to make place in Final round were awarded with consolation prizes.

The winning team took away cash award of Rs 10000, winner trophy and certificate. The first and second runner up was given away cash award of ?5,000 and ?3000, respectively, with runners cup and merit certificate.

Dr Shivkumar Menon, Registrar, Yenapoya University, Mathew Assistant Manager Circulation, The Hindu, Mangaluru branch were present among others.
