Mangaluru: A first of its kind surgery reported in Mangalore was successfully done at A.J. Hospital & Research Centre by the team of doctors headed by Dr. Jayashankar Marla Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon.
Chandrakanth (55 years) was diagnosed with Rheumatic Heart Disease, severe mitral stenosis in Atrial Fibrillation. He was suggested to undergo Mitral Valve Replacement surgery in 2007. However, the surgery was postponed in view of sternal incision.
He was progressively symptomatic and he decided to undergo open heart surgery and consulted Dr. Jayashankar Marla, Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at A J Hospital & Research Centre.
He was offered minimally invasive surgery through small incision in the chest from the right side and he was willing to accept the new treatment option. Subsequently, he underwent successful mitral valve repair with left atrial appendage ligation and modified maze procedure through minimal invasive approach from right side of chest. Heart lung machine was connected through small incision in the right thigh. Post surgery, his recovery was quick and he had uneventful short hospital stay.
The operation was done with the support of Dr. Madhav Kamath, Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Dr. Gourav Shetty, Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Dr. Gururaj Tanthry, Chief Cardiac Anaesthesiologist and Dr. Trevor Sequeira, Cardiac Anaesthesiologist and support staff.
