Mangaluru: The Department of General Surgery, Father Muller Medical College, organized “Undergraduate Surgery Quiz 2019” for MBBS students on 26.10.2019 from 2.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. at Hospital Conference Hall. Students from ten Medical Colleges from all over Karnataka consisting of 49 teams have participated in the quiz.
The event was half a day program. The inaugural function began with invoking the blessings of the Almighty by undergraduate students followed by the lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries on the dais.
The welcome address was delivered by Dr. Leo Francis Tauro, Professor & Head of the Department, Department of General Surgery. Dr. Sriram Bhat, Professor and HOD, Department of General Surgery, Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore was the Chief Guest for the function. The Chief Guest in his inaugural address stressed the importance of quizzing. He said quizzing will help in improving the brain’s reflexes but may not help much in the examinations, although it will help us assess knowledge of the subject. He said that Father Muller Hospital is a well-known hospital from his childhood days catering to the needs of the entire South Canara and neighboring districts.
Dr. Jayaprakash Alva, Dean, Father Muller Medical College, Mangalore addressed the gathering, congratulating the participants and the faculty members of the department for taking the initiative in organizing the quiz every year. He expressed his satisfaction that the quiz has gained popularity over the years as seen from the increase in the number of participating colleges from all over Karnataka. He suggested taking the quiz to the national level in the subsequent years.
The function was presided over by Rev. Fr. Richard Coelho, Director, Father Muller Medical College Hospital, Mangalore. In his Presidential address, he expressed his sincere thanks to the Chief Guest for recognizing the contribution of Father Muller in community service and education over the years. He congratulated the department for organizing the event. He wished all the participants good luck.
Dr. Chirag Pereira, Assistant Professor was the Quiz Master, assisted by Dr. Manohar Martis and Dr. Varun Khullar. The quiz consisted of a preliminary selection round followed by a final quiz with the top 5 teams. The final quiz consisted of five rounds which included MCQ round, Q & A round, Pictionary round, guess the surgeon and rapid-fire rounds.
Mr. Suhas and Mr. Mali Abhishek from Yenepoya Medical College, Mangalore won the first prize, the second prize by Ms. Priya and Mr. Hussain from Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, and the third prize by Ms. Spoorthi and Mr. Likhith from Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences, Bangalore.
The Prizes were distributed by HOD and other Senior Professors in the Department of General Surgery. Dr. John Joseph S. Martis, Professor & Unit Head rendered the vote of thanks. The programme was compered by Dr. Supriya Pinto, a final year postgraduate student. Overall the programme was a grand success and well appreciated by the participants.
The cash prize was sponsored by the Father Muller Charitable Institutions management. In addition to it, the first and second prize winners were presented with books authored by Dr. Rajgopal Shenoy, Prof and Associate Dean, KMC Manipal, while the third prize, were presented with books authored by Dr. Sri Ram Bhat, Prof, and HOD, KMC, Mangalore.
