Mangaluru: A 10- day annual NCC training camp held at St Aloysius College campus from May 21 culminated on May 30, 2018. The camp was held in the college premises after a gap of 58 years.
The camp, organized in association with NCC group headquarters, Mangaluru and the 18 Karnataka Battalion, NCC is one of the major training activities conducted by the Battalion. The main aim of this camp was to acquaint and the train the NCC Cadets with the syllabus and various subjects which are to be imparted to them.
The camp activities were conducted by the officers and PI staff of the 18 Karnataka Battalion NCC along with ANOs from over 16 schools and 12 colleges. Col. Regi Philipose, Commanding Officer of 18 Karnataka Battalion NCC was the Camp Commander, while the Deputy Camp Commandant was Lt. Col. Gracian Sequiera, the Administrative Officer of 18. The ten-day rigorous training camp included military subjects such as drill, map reading, weapon training, field craft, battle craft, firing, PT and yoga. 600 Cadets from 12 colleges and 16 schools belonging to 18 Karnataka Battalion participated in this camp. Karnataka Battalion NCC. On Thursday, May 24 Col. Anil Nautiyal, Group Commander of NCC Group HQ, Mangaluru visited the training camp and interacted with the cadets.
10 ANOs, 19 PI staffs and 8 civilian staffs rendered their services throughout the camp. Physical training, drill, weapons training, firing, personality development, health and hygiene, communication skills and such other activities were conducted at the training camp. Cadets also got to participate in cultural events. Apart from this map reading and battle craft training was held. Cadets were presented with medals and certificates like – ‘A’ for First Year, ‘B’for Second Year and ‘C’ for Third year.
During the annual training camp, cadets also took part in co-curricular activities, sports/games, etc. They were imparted training on how to handle 22 Rifles and 5.56 INSAS Rifles. The cadets took a rally around the city and provided awareness on Swachh Bharath, smoking, drugs, alcohol etc. Tree plantation was done at St Aloysius College and lectures on first aid, road safety and traffic rules was also organised.
The NCC aims at developing character, comradeship, discipline, a secular outlook, the spirit of adventure and ideals of selfless service among young citizens. It aims at creating a pool of organized, trained and motivated youth with leadership qualities in all walks of life. Besides this, the NCC also provides an environment conducive to motivating young Indians to join the armed forces.
Speaking at the valedictory function of the camp, Col. Regi Philipose expressed his gratitude to St Aloysius College and to the Cadets, and rest of the crew. “I am happy that this camp ended successfully. We had no injuries nor did anyone get sick. Everyone followed the rules and discipline was well-maintained. I am also happy to say that I didn’t confiscate any mobile phones from anyone of you. All of you were great compared to earlier camp cadets. This camp was to inculcate unity and discipline, so that you cadets become better citizens of this country, and to serve the nation with integrity and loyalty- and you all did a great job during this training. Also remember that the NCC-ATC is also aimed at developing character, comradeship, discipline, a secular outlook, the spirit of adventure and ideals of selfless service among young citizens. It will also provide an environment conducive to motivating young Indians to join the armed forces. Be loyal and respect others. Wish you best of luck in your future career and endeavors,” he said.
Addressing the cadets Chief guest Fr Praveen Martis Sj said, “NCC plays a significant role in personality development. discipline learnt during student life molds one’s personality. National Cadet Corps (NCC) which works with the motto, “Unity & Discipline” has been doing great service to the youth of this nation in this regard. I am happy that St Aloysius College having the privilege of having all the three wings of NCC- Army Wing, Naval Wing and Air Wing was able to organize this camp, which was a success. I want to stress on four important characters you should develop, namely- Be Competent, Be conscious, Be Compassionate, and Commit yourself. Try to become good human beings, and be self-confident to reach greater heights. Your attitude is also important. Follow your dreams and make them become true. Wish you all the best in your career”.
Lt. Col. Gracian Sequiera, addressing the crowd expressed his heartfelt thanks to his CEO Col. Regi Philipose, for being one of the best bosses he had so far, and as a token of love felicitated Col Regi with a memento. Subedar Major R B Gurung was also felicitated for his tremendous contribution in training camps. Dr AM Narahari-Registrar of St Aloysius College, Lt. Col. Gracian Sequiera and Subedar Major R B Gurung were also present on the dais during the closing ceremony of the camp. ANO’s and PI’s were also honored. Capt. G R Bhat, the ANO at SDM College, Ujire compered the programme, while the vote of thanks was delivered by Capt. Shakin Raj, the ANO at St Aloysius College.
