Mumbai: Director Anurag Kashyap’s latest release, Manmarziyaan, was recently accused of hurting the sentiments of the Sikh community, following which scenes from the movie were cut. One of the scenes that were cut had Taapsee Pannu and Abishek Bachchan smoking openly.

The director had written that he would not be making any cuts to his film and that it wasn’t possible for a movie to be edited once it was released, after which an official complaint was lodged against him for allegedly hurting the sentiments of the Sikh community. Eros, the movie’s distributors, however, removed the objectionable scenes without Kashyap’s approval which has enraged both the director and the actors.

While Abhishek Bachchan has been more accepting of the cuts made to the movie, Taapsee Pannu has been openly backing the director on Twitter by taking the trolls head-on. As the Twitter row intensified, one of the trolls threatened to beat her with a belt. Pinkvilla has quoted the now deleted tweet as having read, “I swear i wish i was her father, all i need is my belt and a jutti. Shittar mar mar ke I would of taken the actress vala bhoot out from her.”

In response to the threat, Taapsee tweeted, “I already feel bad for your kids. God give them strength to live.”

She later tweeted, “My religion never taught me to censor someone’s feelings. I don’t know who gave these bunch of self proclaimed religion saviours the authority to decide what a woman can think and what not. Did u? And if not will u stay quiet when they tell u what to think n what not! I won’t!”

She also shared a captioned picture of a turbaned man smoking in public that read, “Oops ! Can someone check for photoshop ???? Coz this definitely doesn’t happen in our la la land.”

Arjun Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal have also tweeted out their support for Taapsee saying that no religion teaches violence.

The irony of the whole scenario is that the movie was approved by the Central Board of Film Certification with the necessary anti-smoking disclaimers on screen.
