Panaji : Actress Vidya Balan, who won a national award, stated on Monday that modern women are far ahead of their male counterparts.
She was speaking at a discussion about “Women and the Glass Ceiling” that was taking place in conjunction with this year’s 54th International Film Festival of India (IFFI).
Vidya emphasized the importance of women’s representation in Indian cinema, saying, “We all need to get rid of the negative stereotypes of women that are embedded in our culture. In today’s world, women are far ahead of their time.
The actress stated, “We are telling women-oriented stories in movies now because of all the amazing roles played by female actors in Indian films in the past and their desire to do more.”
The actress expressed her willingness to play a variety of roles and said it’s critical to find fresh narratives and characters that the public can identify with.
“Unconventional roles and being yourself while playing those characters is very crucial for me,” she stated.
In response to a question about how she comes up with such diverse personas for every movie, Vidya said that her drive comes from wanting to take on roles she never would have imagined and from wanting to challenge the stereotypes associated with women in the movies.
“I find it extremely freeing to step outside of my comfort zone with every movie I work on, and that calls for a lot of hard work,” the actress remarked.
In a career spanning two decades now, the actress has essayed unconventional roles with great finesse in films such as ‘Parineeta’, ‘Bhoola Bhulaiya’, ‘Paa’, ‘Kahani’, ‘The Dirty Picture’, ‘Shakuntala Devi’, and ‘Shareni’, among others.
