Vijayapura: Vijayapura, Karnataka State Akkamahadevi Women’s University, the only women’s institution in the state, known for its dedication to empowering women through education and sustainable practices, has made notable progress in environmental preservation. As one of its significant accomplishments, the university established a solar power-generating unit in 2019 to represent its commitment to sustainable energy. Recent events, however, have shown financial difficulties, raising questions about the viability of this green effort.
The solar power generating equipment has been producing an astounding 650 watts of electricity each day on the university campus as part of a partnership with Clean Max Neveiro Pvt Ltd, a company located in Chennai. The Science and Social Science Department buildings on campus proudly display roughly 2400 square feet of solar panels that are used to generate power.
The university’s energy requirements are properly met by the solar power system, and any extra electricity is delivered to the HESCOM (Hubli electricity supply company) grid, helping to protect the environment in the area. However, the organization is now worried about how this procedure would affect its finances. The institution provides solar electricity to HESCOM under the present power purchase agreement for a significantly reduced price of Rs 3.83 per unit. Despite producing its own electricity using solar energy, it nevertheless purchases it from HESCOM at a higher rate of Rs 7.50 per unit, incurring a substantial expense.
As a result of the current electricity pricing and the existing power purchase agreement, Women’s University was presented with a stunning bill from HESCOM last month in the amount of over 5 lakhs. The Women’s University’s president, Prof. Chancellor Tulasimala, addressed the issue and argued for a reassessment of the power purchase agreement as a result of this disparity in pricing. Prof. Tulasimala stressed the demand for a reasonable and equitable pricing system that supports the university’s financial goals while fostering its dedication to renewable energy.
