New Delhi: A wealthy Indian-origin couple and their 18-year-old daughter were discovered dead in their mansion in Massachusetts. Rakesh Kamal, 57, his wife Teena, 54, and their daughter Ariana were found on Thursday evening in an apparent case of domestic violence. The preliminary investigation indicates no outside involvement, and authorities are treating it as a tragic incident within the family.
The Kamal family, originally from India, had made a mark in the US tech industry, founding the now-defunct education systems company EduNova. Rakesh Kamal, an accomplished alumnus of Boston University, the MIT Sloan School of Management, and Stanford University, faced financial troubles following the dissolution of EduNova in 2021 and the subsequent foreclosure of their mansion, which was sold for $3 million in 2022.
Teena Kamal, a Harvard University alumna, filed for bankruptcy in September 2022, contributing to the family’s financial distress. The mansion, a 19,000-square-foot estate with 11 bedrooms, was originally purchased for $4 million in 2019.
The tragic discovery was made after a relative, concerned about not hearing from the family, contacted the police. The bodies of Rakesh, Teena, and Ariana were found inside the mansion. Officials noted that the area is considered safe, with the investigation ongoing to determine the definitive motive behind the incident.
While the medical examiner’s ruling is awaited, a gun was found near Rakesh Kamal’s body, raising questions about the nature of the tragedy. Ariana, described as a bright neuroscience student at Middlebury College, had a promising future ahead, according to her school, Milton Academy. The incident has left the community in shock, emphasizing the importance of addressing domestic violence and mental health concerns.
