If you want to learn more about emotions and how they develop, this is the book for you. Lisa Feldman Barret’s book, How Emotions Are Made: The Secret Life of the Brain, is exciting to read.

Various books have been authored on the subject of what many call as “emotional intelligence”. What makes this book interesting is the fact that it is written by an actual Scientist unlike many who publish on the topic. The author’s concise and clear narrative style makes this book simple to read.

Everyone understand what emotions are. But how many of us are aware of their creation? Do you also ever wonder where these feelings come from? Researchers and scientists have spent years discovering how the brain, nerves, and emotions are put together. Barret has introduced a new concept. She claims that, in contrast to the common belief that emotions are generally understood, emotions are created instantly and are inconsistent. She has also made an effort to remove the misconception that says we are powerless over our feelings and emotions.

As according Barret, the brain’s primary function is to make predictions about what will happen in the next minute. To attain it, the brain constructs future-predictive models of the world. These simulations and versions, which the book refers to as predictions, shape how we see the world. We apply these versions, which are formed subconsciously, to perceive the environment. Our perceptions can be altered or influenced as a result. It is well know that our bodies already contain emotions.

Barret says that as we develop and grow, we actually build our emotions. It is important to read the book in order to fully grasp her theory thoroughly.
