Sony has introduced an innovative piece of technology: a futuristic body air conditioner designed to be discreetly tucked into the back of one’s shirt, offering a potential alternative to traditional handheld fans.
Dubbed the “smart wearable thermo device kit,” Sony’s latest creation, the Reon Pocket 5, was unveiled on April 23. This wearable climate control system, worn on the back of the neck, boasts a thermos module and an array of sensors—including temperature, humidity, and motion sensors—to determine and maintain the wearer’s optimal temperature.
The Reon Pocket 5 provides five cooling levels for hot conditions and four warming levels for cooler environments, ensuring adaptability to various scenarios, from crowded trains to chilly airplane cabins. To enhance its functionality, the device can be paired with the accompanying Reon Pocket Tag, a small wearable sensor that detects surrounding conditions and communicates them to the neck unit for proactive temperature adjustments. While the Reon Pocket 5 focuses on regulating body temperature independently, the tag offers a more comprehensive approach to personalized comfort.
For users who prefer hands-on control, the Reon Pocket 5 can be managed through the newly launched Reon Pocket App, compatible with both iOS and Android devices. This app enables adjustments to the cooling and warming levels via Bluetooth, facilitating on-the-go customization. Additionally, the device boasts an impressive 17-hour battery life on a single charge, as reported by Tech Radar.
Although Sony’s personal climate control technology isn’t entirely novel—having debuted in Japan in 2019—the global release of the Reon Pocket 5 signifies a broader market expansion, starting with the UK market. Pre-orders for the Reon Pocket 5 are currently open on Sony’s website, priced at 139 pounds (approximately $170 USD or AU$260), with shipping slated to commence on May 15th. The base package, named “Reon 5T,” includes the device itself, a Reon Pocket Tag, and a white neckband, while a beige neckband option is available for an additional 25 pounds for those seeking a touch of style.
Featuring two types of air vent covers catering to both business and casual attire, the Reon Pocket 5 seamlessly integrates into various styles, as stated in a press release by Sony.
The Reon Pocket 5 is scheduled to become available in Singapore starting May 2024, with releases in Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam following at a later date.
