Karwar: It has been two decades since they were displaced from their ancestral homes to make way for the prestigious Kadamba Naval Base project. As the second phase of the project nears completion, the affected families continue to grapple with the lingering ordeal of inadequate compensation and unfulfilled promises.

Situated in Araga village of Karwar taluk, the Kadamba Naval Base stands as a symbol of national pride, hailed as the largest naval base in Asia. However, behind this feat lies a tale of sacrifice, where thousands of families willingly relinquished their land for the greater good. While many villages were relocated to accommodate the project’s expansion, hundreds of families entrusted with new plots are still awaiting rightful compensation.

Despite assurances of job opportunities for land donors at the project’s inception, disillusionment now prevails among the affected families, who find themselves grappling with financial burdens and unfulfilled promises. The arduous journey from office to office in pursuit of due compensation has left them disheartened, with no respite in sight.

Affected people recall the optimism that once filled their hearts as they entrusted their land for the project’s development. However, the reality has been far from the promised salvation, with many falling into debt traps and some even passing away without witnessing justice. Legal battles ensued, with the Supreme Court eventually decreeing compensation of Rs. 11,500 along with accrued interest. While some received their rightful dues following legal intervention, countless families continue to languish in the hope of equitable compensation.

Deputy Commissioner Gangubai Manakar acknowledges the plight of the affected families, revealing that funds amounting to Rs. 1 crore have been disbursed to individuals who previously applied for additional compensation. Furthermore, efforts are underway at the governmental level to address the grievances of those who are yet to receive adequate recompense. The district administration remains committed to ensuring justice for the displaced families, striving to expedite the distribution of released compensation and address pending appeals with diligence and empathy.
