In a tragic turn of events, Ganesh Kumar (46) from Arakalagoodu, Hassan, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Sixth Additional District and Sessions Judge of the city on April 8. The verdict comes after Ganesh was found guilty of strangling his wife to death.
Residing in a rented house in Kavoor with his wife, mother, and two children, Ganesh was convicted of subjecting his wife to mental and physical torture through daily quarrels. The incident took a gruesome turn on July 1, 2020, when Ganesh, under the pretext of buying groceries, took his wife on a bike ride around 5:30 pm. Between 7 pm and 7:20 pm, he strangled her at Anthonykatte and pushed her into a stone quarry. Furthermore, he threatened his mother-in-law with harm.
Inspector Raghava S. of the Kavoor Police Station filed the case, leading to an inquiry conducted by Justice Kantaraju. Ganesh was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment, along with fines totaling Rs one lakh. Additionally, he received three years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 25,000 under IPC section 498 (A), and two years of rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs 25,000 under IPC section 506. The judge also instructed the District Legal Services Authority to provide compensation to the victims.
The prosecution was led by Public Prosecutors Jyoti Pramoda Nayaka and B. Shekhar Shetty, with Public Prosecutor Chowdhury Motilal arguing for the prosecution.
