Mangalore: Admissions to postgraduate courses at Mangalore University’s Mangalagangothri campus in Konaje have witnessed a significant decline, dwindling to nearly 50%. The decrease is attributed to several factors including outdated syllabi, a shortage of permanent faculty, and the proliferation of postgraduate courses offered by both private and government colleges under MU.

Data reveals that in the academic year 2023–24, PG programs admitted 1,152 and 1,096 students in their first and second years respectively. This falls short considering the total seats available for PG courses at the Konaje campus, which exceed 2,200. Presently, a total of 2,248 candidates are enrolled on campus, with a notable increase observed in the female student population, totaling 1,400, while the remainder are male.

Analyzing course-wise admissions, it’s noted that MCom leads with 203 students out of a total intake of 300, followed by MSW, MBA, and MSc in chemistry. Conversely, the least enrollments were recorded for MSc in material science, with only six students across both years despite an intake capacity of 82. Even courses like economics, which historically experienced high demand, have seen a decline in admissions.

One senior professor expressed concern over the lack of permanent faculty, stating that prospective candidates thoroughly evaluate courses before enrollment, leading to reluctance due to the absence of experienced staff. Moreover, the increasing reliance on guest lecturers, who often lack sufficient experience, further exacerbates the situation. Additionally, the establishment of PG centers in Udupi and Kodagu, along with offerings from private colleges, contributes to the decline in admissions.

MA Khan, registrar (evaluation-in-charge) of MU, highlighted that while MU graduates approximately 38,000 students annually, only a fraction pursue higher education. Limited job opportunities in certain fields and the availability of earlier start dates for PG courses in private colleges are cited as reasons for the shift away from university offerings.
