Mangalore: The Mangaluru city police are making elaborate arrangements and are leaving no stones unturned to prevent any untoward incident during the visit of Kerala Chief Minister Pinari Vijayan to address communal harmony rally in the city on February 25.

Police have served notices to 41 people instrumental in declaring bandh on that day and have sought clarifications.

Addressing media, City Police Commissioner Chandrashekar and district Superintendent of Police B G Borase briefed about the security measures being taken. Around 2000 police personnel in addition to 20 platoons of Karnataka State Reserve police will be on duty that day, said Chandrashekar.

The commissioner assured of full protection to the rally organisers and warned anti-social elements trying to take law and order in their hands of serious action.
Referring to the Supreme Court directive, none has the right to declare bandh illegally and hence notices have been served to 41 people seeking explanation, police commissioner clarified.

However, right wing activists led by BJP are at logger heads with the left front-led Kerala government over killings of several right wing activists in several parts of Kerala including Kasaragod and neighbouring state’s Dakshina Kannada district.

To vitiate the peaceful atmosphere, CPI (M) unit office in Thokottu, on the outskirts of the city was set on fire by the miscreants on the night of February 22.

Right wing activists have announced holding a rally on February 24 opposing the visit of Kerala CM to the city.
