In a proactive move to address the severe water shortage in Bengaluru, the city’s water management body has announced a voluntary 10-day window for tap aerator installation from March 21 to 31. The initiative aims to conserve water across various sectors, including buildings, commercial establishments, restaurants, luxury hotels, industries, and other public areas.
BWSSB’s Conservation Measures
The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has mandated the use of aerators in taps used by bulk consumers in the tech hub. This initiative comes amidst recent restrictions imposed by the agency, including limitations on the usage of Cauvery and borewell water for activities like pool dances and rain dances during the upcoming Holi celebrations. Additionally, restrictions have been placed on the usage of potable/drinking water for activities such as washing cars, construction, gardening, and in fountains and swimming pools.
Understanding Aerator Installation
Aerators are devices fixed to tap openings to regulate the flow of water. V Ram Prasath Manohar, Chairman of the BWSSB, emphasized the importance of aerators in conserving water, highlighting that they can save up to 60 to 85 percent of water.
Installation Drive Timeline
Authorities have announced the commencement of aerator installation in buildings from March 21 onwards. During the voluntary 10-day window from March 21 to 31, buildings have the option to install aerators voluntarily. However, after this period, non-compliant buildings will face mandatory installation.
Water Shortage Challenges
Bengaluru, along with the rest of Karnataka, is facing a severe water shortage, exacerbated by the drying up of approximately 6,900 borewells across the city. The deficiency has been further compounded by low rainfall during the past monsoon season, highlighting the urgent need for conservation measures.
