An 11-year-old boy tragically lost his life in an accident while enjoying a game of cricket with friends in the Lohegaon area of Pune on Thursday. The young victim, Shaurya Kalidas Khandve, had aspirations of pursuing a career in wrestling, as shared by his relatives.
The incident occurred around 9 pm on May 2 at the Jagatguru Sports Academy Ground in Lohegaon. Fondly known as Shambhu among his friends and family, Shaurya is survived by his parents and an elder brother. The Vimantal police station registered a case of accidental death on May 4 in relation to the incident.
According to an officer from the Vimantal police station, preliminary information indicates that Shaurya was playing cricket with friends at the Jagatguru Sports Academy Ground, which offers night playing facilities. While bowling, Shaurya was struck by the ball in a sensitive area, causing him to collapse. Despite being rushed to a nearby private hospital, he was pronounced dead by the attending doctors.
Assistant Inspector Sachin Dhamane, assigned to investigate the case, stated, “We have initiated an investigation into the incident, registering it as a case of accidental death. We will closely examine the autopsy report and interview individuals present at the ground during the incident.”
Speaking about Shaurya, his relative Rameshwar Poul mentioned, “Shaurya was a sixth-grade student with a keen interest in sports and a wide circle of friends.”
Expressing grief, Shaurya’s uncle Bandu Khandave lamented, “In Shaurya’s untimely demise, our joint family of over 40 members has lost a promising young soul. He held ambitions of becoming a wrestler and had begun training earnestly. This tragic event underscores the importance of adhering to safety measures while engaging in sports.”
