The death toll resulting from the collapse of a large hoarding in Mumbai has climbed to 12 as of early Tuesday morning. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) conducted rescue operations throughout the night to aid those trapped. Around 60 individuals have sustained injuries in the incident.
According to NDRF inspector Gaurav Chauhan, eight bodies have been recovered thus far as excavators worked to clear the debris. However, four more individuals remain trapped beneath the rubble. Chauhan mentioned the difficulty in removing them due to the nearby petrol pump, which poses a hazardous situation.
President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar have expressed their condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to the injured in the Ghatkopar incident.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde visited the site on Monday to assess the situation and announced financial assistance of ₹5 lakh for the families of the deceased, along with covering the medical expenses of the injured.
Authorities revealed that the hoarding was erected illegally without prior permission from the BMC. Mumbai police have filed a case against owner Bhavesh Bhide and others involved at the Pantnagar police station under IPC 304, 338, 337, and 34.
President Murmu expressed her condolences on social media, stating, “The news of several casualties due to the collapse of a hoarding in Ghatkopar area of Mumbai is extremely sad. I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured and wish for the success of the relief and rescue operations.”
