These recent operations, executed under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), focused on about six locations associated with Virendra Ram, the former chief engineer of the Jharkhand Rural Development Department, and his close associates. Ram had been apprehended by the ED in February 2023 in connection with a money laundering inquiry.
Footage from the search depicts a significant sum of currency strewn across a room purportedly linked to the domestic staff of Sanjiv Lal, the personal secretary to Jharkhand Rural Development minister Alamgir Alam.
In response to the developments, Pratul Shahdev, spokesperson for the Jharkhand BJP, commented, “Corruption persists in Jharkhand. The substantial amount of money discovered during elections suggests intentions to utilize these funds for electoral purposes. The Election Commission should address this matter promptly.”
The investigation is currently underway simultaneously at nine locations, including Sail City in Ranchi. One team is engaged in locating Vikas Kumar, an engineer associated with the Road Construction Department, while another team is conducting searches in the Bariatu, Morhabadi, and Bodia areas.
