Guwahati: Footage circulating online depicts polling officials in remote regions of Arunachal Pradesh, situated close to the Line of Actual Control, the unofficial border with China. These officials are seen transporting bulky EVMs (electronic voting machines) and other election paraphernalia, enduring challenging terrain and inclement weather conditions to reach voters across eight polling stations in four districts where re-polling occurred recently.
The re-polling, conducted between 6 AM and 2 PM, proceeded peacefully, with approximately 4,470 voters – representing an 85 percent turnout – exercising their voting rights, according to authorities. This re-polling was necessitated in East Kameng, Kurunq Kumey, Upper Subansiri, and Siang districts following the nullification of earlier polling by the Election Commission due to disturbances.
Arunachal Pradesh, comprising two Lok Sabha constituencies, conducted its initial phase of voting on April 19. However, instances of violence marred the polling process in the aforementioned districts, leading to the Election Commission’s decision to call for re-polling.
Reports indicate that some EVMs in these areas suffered damage during the aforementioned incidents of violence. In a manner similar to Manipur, which encountered violence and underwent re-polling across 11 booths, the Election Commission orchestrated a second round of voting in Arunachal Pradesh.
Following the re-polling in Arunachal Pradesh, election officials, accompanied by security personnel, had to traverse back through challenging mountainous roads amid heavy rainfall to return to their respective sub-divisional and district headquarters.
Videos shared by the state’s election commission highlight the arduous nature of this task.
