It’s rarer that a few people take up career in politics from filmdom. There are many cine stars who have become successful in politics, such as NTR and Chiranjeevi from Andhra Pradesh, Jayalalita from Tamil Nadu and the list goes on. Meanwhile, one wonders all those cine stars who come to politics are really involved in peoples service, or the political parties are using them with glamour touch to woe the voters.
The political leaders NTR and Chiranjeevi are significant to be known for social service. At the present scenario, the political parties pursue glamour like cricket as ambassadors of respective parties. These cine stars without being involved in social welfare activities likely to change the democratical governance. There would not be any difference in voters who was lured to vote for a party by alcohol or toddy; with that of a voter inspired by his favorite cine star.
The Karnataka that is facing the upcoming legislative assembly elections is not free of glamour touch. In the past, cine stars used to join a political party that has changed now. The Sandalwood stars are eagerly waiting to join the politics. Sandalwood actor Rakshita and Puja Gandhi already got tickets to contest the upcoming assembly elections from BSR Congress party. Puja Gandhi who tried to find a political future in JDS initially and now is with BSR.
The national party Congress is exploiting the glamour by issuing party ticket to veteran actors Ambarish and Umasri, who has been successfully, contested the elections. Umasri has been in strengthening party in grass root level in her constituency. Ramya who joined Congress a few months ago, is doubtful to get party ticket to contest the upcoming general elections. Meanwhile, actor and the former minister YogesJP with the hope of getting Congress ticket. A few of cine stars have joined the parties while the role of a few is limited to publicity campaign. Bhavana and Darshan are supporting Congress in their poll campaign. The bollywood celebrities Ritesh deshmuk and Telugu super star Chiranjeevi are also involved in campaign.
Another national party BJP has several politicians from filmdom. It has so far none in Karnataka who could use glamour to get more votes. The bollywood celebrities Shatrugna Sinha and Dharmendra had won parliamentary polls. The actor Hemamalini is a member of Rajya Sabha. Despite the state BJP has Mukhyamantri Chandru, Shruti, Srinat and Tara; they are not effective in wooing the voters. The chances of getting tickets for them are also remote.
The regional party BSR Congress has more from filmdom. ‘We don’t need star campaigners. Our party activists themselves are star campaigners,’ said JDS state president Kumaraswamy. The tone implies that he will not give chance to those from filmdom. The recently launched KJP has no cine stars. Karnataka is unique in that sense, because cine stars cannot lure voters in Karnataka unlike in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh with an exception of a few constituencies.
The former CM Bangarappa urged Dr Raj Kumar to contest the assembly elections, while the latter did not accept the offer and remained far away from politics. His sons also remained away from politics. The likelihood tragedy of helicopter ride to campaign by a cine star also forms a part of politico-cum-actor.
Whatever may be the case, the voters of Karnataka are smarter because they have clear idea that the reel heroes cannot become real heroes.
